In the south east of Oklahoma there is a breed which is one of the rarest and purest strains of Spanish Mustang in the US, the Choctaw pony. These horses are fighting drought, tornadoes, poachers and predators. A group of people are working extremely hard trying to preserve this rare breed which today is the Heritage horse of Oklahoma. In a town called Kalix in the north of Sweden, my family and I have rescued 20 American Bashkir Curlies. These horses have been fighting for their lives with little access to water and food, during hot summers and cold winters. Now five years later these horses are healthy and happy, but the horses are still recovering from their traumatizing past. Now there is a herd of 21 horses, 17 of them American Bashkir Curlies. I've been documenting the Choctaw pony during my visits to Oklahoma. I've also been taking photos of the Ellaree Native Horses herd for several years.
